Sheri began assisting her aunt part-time, transitioning to a full-time role after graduation. This highlights the intergenerational transfer of skills and passion within the Chingay community.

Since November, residents have dedicated their weekends to producing 1,500 stars for the parade. Sheri relies on a team to manage the workload, leveraging individual strengths. Specifically, team members with engineering backgrounds are crucial for the “technical part,” including communication with contractors and fabricators, heavy machining, and ensuring safety during the construction of large structures.

Sheri was tasked with developing costume ideas within a two-week timeframe. Despite the time constraint, she generated ten distinct concepts, with half ultimately being selected for implementation. The design process is meticulous, with every element serving a specific purpose.

For example, the “pep layer” of a particular costume is inspired by Christmas holly leaves with red berries, intentionally mimicking the natural fur of a reindeer. The white fur and accompanying fur pants further reinforce this resemblance. Additionally, snowflake motifs are incorporated to enhance the shimmering and light-catching effect during nighttime performances.

Sheri emphasizes the deeper meaning behind her designs. She aims to reflect Singapore’s unique blend of modernity, international influence, and traditional heritage – referencing areas like Little India, Chinatown, and the Marina Bay skyline. Her goal is for the costumes to embody a balance between contemporary aesthetics and cultural roots. As she states, “Singapore is a city that blends both modernity, international spirit and also the traditional heritage… So I wish my costume uh can reflect that the balance between modernity contemporarily and also the traditional heritage.”

This year’s Chingay Parade features a circular route designed to create a more immersive experience for the audience and increase participation. A key element of this is a tiered 360° stage capable of rising to a height of 10 meters.
