The Easiest Way to Build AI Agents (MCPs Tutorial)

Key Concepts

• MCP (Model Control Protocol): A standard for connecting Large Language Models (LLMs) to external tools, enabling AI agents to interact with third-party services.
• Open API: A standard for APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that allows developers to connect their applications to each other.
• AI Agents: Autonomous entities that can perform tasks by interacting with their environment, often powered by LLMs.
• Tools: In the context of MCPs, tools represent actions that an AI agent can perform, such as fetching data or interacting with a service.
• Resources: Data or files that provide knowledge to AI agents, often controlled by the application logic.
• Prompts: Instructions or conversation starters that guide the AI agent's behavior, typically controlled by the user.
• Cursor: An AI-powered code editor that assists developers in building and testing AI agents.
• PRD (Product Requirements Document): A document that specifies the requirements, features, and functionality of a product or application.

Why MCPs Are Important

• Standardization: MCPs are becoming the new standard in the AI industry for connecting LLMs to tools, similar to how USB-C became a standard for connecting devices.
• Collaboration: MCPs enable seamless collaboration among AI agent developers by providing a common language for connecting agents to tools.
• Dynamic Schema: Unlike Open API, MCPs are discoverable at runtime, meaning that agents can automatically adapt to changes in the API without manual updates.
• Mapping to AI Agent Components: MCPs map directly to the core components of AI agents: tools (actions), resources (knowledge), and prompts (instructions).

Key Differences Between MCP and Open API
