Son find mum's last words to him 20 years after she died | Australian Story

Key Concepts:

• Maternal suicide and its impact on the speaker.
• Discovery of the mother's poems after 20 years.
• The significance of a poem addressed to the speaker.
• Emotional impact of the discovery: feeling loved and connected to the mother.

Discovery and Initial Lack of Information:

The speaker describes a childhood marked by the absence of their mother, who died by suicide when the speaker was three years old. The father was unwilling to discuss the mother, causing the speaker to operate on "very scant information." The speaker characterizes their mother as "basically a ghost" due to the lack of available information.

Finding the Poems:

Nearly 21 years after the mother's death, the speaker discovered "two or 300" of their mother's handwritten poems in their father's filing cabinet. This discovery marked a turning point in the speaker's understanding of their mother.

The Penultimate Poem and Its Significance:

Among the poems, the "penultimate poem" held particular significance because it was addressed directly to the speaker. The poem was written just a couple of months before the mother's suicide. The speaker reflects on whether their mother hoped they would find and read the poem one day.

Emotional Impact and Connection:

The speaker expresses profound emotional relief and joy upon reading the poem. The final verse, "all the seas of joy rise to sing for you boy surge and swell and roar," deeply resonated with the speaker, causing them to get "gooseies." The discovery transformed the speaker's perception of their mother, making her feel "human" and "a person." The speaker now feels "special" and believes they "had a mom that really loved me."

Synthesis/Conclusion:

The discovery of the mother's poems, particularly the one addressed to the speaker, provided a sense of connection and love that had been missing since childhood. The poems transformed the speaker's understanding of their mother from a distant figure to a loving and present individual, bringing emotional healing and a sense of belonging.
