Discovery and Initial Care:

A baby gorilla, later named Zetin, was discovered being smuggled on a cargo plane at Istanbul Airport in December. The gorilla was immediately taken to a zoo in Turkey for care and rehabilitation. Since his arrival, Zetin has shown positive progress, gaining weight and growing taller.

Naming and Public Engagement:

The gorilla's name, Zetin, which means "olive" in Turkish, was chosen through a public competition, demonstrating public interest and engagement in the animal's well-being.

Repatriation Efforts and Concerns:

Turkish authorities are actively working to repatriate Zetin to his home country, Nigeria. However, a key concern is ensuring Zetin's safety upon his return. Authorities are seeking assurances from Nigeria that he will be protected from illegal wildlife traders and the dangers of the illegal wildlife trade. The primary goal is to prevent Zetin from being subjected to further exploitation or harm.

International Cooperation and Animal Welfare:

The case highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating wildlife trafficking and ensuring the welfare of endangered species. The efforts to repatriate Zetin underscore the commitment to returning animals to their natural habitats whenever possible, while also addressing the underlying issues that contribute to illegal wildlife trade.

Conclusion:

The story of Zetin the baby gorilla underscores the ongoing challenges of wildlife trafficking and the importance of international collaboration in protecting endangered species. While Zetin's recovery and potential repatriation are positive developments, the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to combat illegal wildlife trade remains crucial. The focus is on ensuring Zetin's safety and well-being, both in the short term and upon his return to Nigeria.
