Remaining organic in an artificial world | Eliana Reyes | TEDxCabarete
By TEDx Talks
Key Concepts:
- Self-Liberation: The process of freeing oneself from external pressures and false identities to live authentically.
- Unmasking: Shedding the "mask" of false identity and societal expectations.
- Inner Whisper/Inner Voice: The intuitive guidance or intelligence from within.
- Organic Intelligence (OI): A term coined by the speaker for an inner knowingness, wisdom, or sacred technology that guides individuals back to themselves, akin to an inner Siri or Alexa.
- Prompts: Signals or invitations from one's Organic Intelligence (OI) that guide personal growth and self-discovery, often appearing as impulses, feelings, dreams, or significant life events.
- Creating Space: Intentionally setting aside time and environment to connect with oneself, observe inner thoughts, and listen to one's inner intelligence.
- Overstimulation and Under-Self: The modern condition of being bombarded with excessive information and external stimuli, leading to a diminished connection with one's true self.
- Grief as an Invitation: The perspective that profound loss and pain can serve as prompts for deeper self-discovery and transformation.
- Inside Job: The idea that self-liberation is an internal process requiring personal effort and commitment, independent of external validation.
Introduction: The Journey of Unmasking and Rebirth
The speaker recounts two profound life experiences, referred to as "deaths," that initiated her journey of self-liberation.
First "Death" and Self-Discovery
On December 12, 2012, at age 26, the speaker experienced her first "death." Feeling "emotion sick," exhausted from being everything for everyone, and disconnected from her true self, she realized she was "sick of betraying myself, abandoning myself, abusing myself." After a series of betrayals from trusted individuals, her life "breaks" and begins to rewrite its story. In this moment of crisis, she received a vision of a mirror reflecting a face she barely recognized – a part of her that had suffocated behind a "mask of false identity." She chose to say "yes" to an "inner whisper," initiating her "unmasking journey" and meeting herself for the first time. This initial transformation, however, was just an invitation for more profound changes.
Second "Death" and the Call to Cambodia
Three years later, at 29, the speaker felt "on top of the whole world," living "mask-free." However, within four months, she experienced a series of devastating losses: losing her virginity, getting pregnant, losing her father, miscarrying her baby, and losing her relationship. Broken and grieving, she again found herself on the floor, asking "why?" Amidst her grief, journaling led to another "inner invitation": "buy a one-way ticket to Cambodia." Despite not knowing what Cambodia was, she said yes. What she anticipated as two months of healing evolved into years of deep self-discovery. She realized that "grief didn't destroy me. It introduced me to myself," and like the first death, it was an invitation to "come home to myself."
The Power of Self-Liberation
The speaker emphasizes that giving herself the space to be with herself and listening to her own intelligence throughout these journeys led to "confidence, peace, and freedom." She deeply believes that "we all had the power to liberate ourselves completely" and that "knowing yourself and being yourself is the most extrovert [act] in today's world." This is because the external world constantly vies for our "time, energy, and attention," making our "inner being" a valuable "real estate" that we should own to create a life of peace, confidence, and freedom that "nobody can take from us."
Challenges to Self-Liberation in the Modern World
The speaker identifies several reasons why self-liberation is challenging:
External Distractions and Overstimulation
The modern world is "very online" and characterized by "overstimulation" from countless voices, advice, edits, filters, and conflicting messages (e.g., "you're good enough" vs. "you need to fix yourself"). This constant bombardment leads to individuals feeling "disconnected, lonely, and more confused than ever." The speaker cites data: on average, we consume about 34 gigabytes of information a day, but our brain can only process 0.06 gigabytes of that, highlighting that "we're overstimulated and under-self."
Societal Disconnection and Fear of Rejection
The world suffers from "disconnection to self [and] disconnection from each other." It often "doesn't really make it safe for us to be human," which creates a "fear of rejection." Consequently, humans, driven by the desire to belong and feel connected, "learn to edit, curate, to hide behind identities."
Two Core Lessons for Self-Liberation
The speaker shares two fundamental lessons learned on her journey:
Lesson 1: Creating Sacred Space for Self-Connection
This lesson emphasizes the necessity of intentionally creating "space to be with ourselves."
- The Purpose: This space allows us to "witness ourselves as we're going through the life and death and flow of this life," to "get to know ourselves," and to "give ourselves what we need."
- The Practice of Journaling and Other Methods: The speaker's primary method is journaling, which she has practiced since age 11, accumulating "about 10,000 days" of journaling. This ritual led to her self-awareness and initiated her unmasking journey. Other suggested methods include art journaling, long walks in nature, painting, music, drawing, or movement – anything that allows for self-reflection and connection.
- The Problem of Overstimulation: Creating this space is crucial because "the world wants us [as a] distraction." By creating space, individuals can "drown out the outside voices that are not you" and "tune in to your own inner voice, your own intelligence," thereby seeing the "map of becoming."
Lesson 2: Listening to Your Organic Intelligence (OI)
This lesson focuses on trusting and following one's inner guidance.
- Defining Organic Intelligence: The speaker introduces "Organic Intelligence (OI)" as an "inner knowingness," a "wisdom," and a "sacred technology that lives in your bones and has been passed down to your lineage." While some call it intuition or God, she reframes it as OI, describing it as "your inner Siri or Alexa, except she's way more ancient and she's programmed specifically to help you recalculate and reroute back to yourself."
- Understanding "Prompts" and Their Manifestation: Just as we use AI prompts, our OI "feeds us prompts so that we can get to know ourselves if we listen." These prompts are like cues, such as "buy a one-way ticket to Cambodia," "go to this TEDx in Cabarete," or "move out of the country." They often "don't make any sense until they do." Prompts manifest differently for everyone: for the speaker, it was an "inner whisper"; for others, it might be a feeling in the body, curiosity, an impulse, dreams, visions, or signs.
- Grief, Pain, and Betrayal as Prompts: Crucially, the speaker highlights that even challenging experiences like "grief is a prompt. Pain is a prompt. Betrayal is a prompt." Every prompt, regardless of its nature, is "an invitation for more parts of you to come out of hiding if you say yes." She encourages prioritizing this inner intelligence and imagining a world where people openly discuss "what prompt are you currently working through? What's your OI telling you to do?"
Conclusion: The Inside Job of Freedom
The speaker concludes by reiterating that "self-liberation is an inside job." She urges listeners to choose "the pain of freedom versus the pain of suppression" by committing to this internal work. This involves making "space for yourself daily, weekly, monthly, yearly," both conceptually and metaphorically, to "know yourself and own yourself and be with yourself." Within this space, one must actively listen to their Organic Intelligence, as "your OI is always leading you into freedom." The ultimate question posed is: "Are you curious enough to meet yourself on the other side of each prompt?" The message is that "all parts of you belong and are waiting to be set free."
