Google Developer News - January 2026

Key Concepts: Project Genie, Android Studio Otter 3, Translate Gemma, Genkit Go, Chrome 145, Google I/O 2026, Large Language Models (LLMs), World Models, Open Translation Models.

DeepMind & Project Genie

DeepMind has released Project Genie, an experimental research prototype web application designed for creating and exploring interactive worlds. This prototype is powered by three core technologies: Genie3, Nanobanana Pro, and Gemini. Genie3 is the foundational world model, a general-purpose system capable of generating diverse and interactive environments in real-time, unlike static 3D experiences.

Project Genie offers three key capabilities:

  • World Sketching: Users can create environments using text and image prompts, which the system then expands into a living, interactive world.
  • World Exploration: Users can navigate created worlds in first or third-person view, with the environment dynamically generated as they move.
  • World Remixing: Existing worlds can be modified and expanded upon by adding new prompts and building on existing designs.

Currently, Project Genie is available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US who are 18 years or older. DeepMind has also provided a guide to effective prompt creation for Genie, accessible via the link in the video description.

Android Studio Otter 3 – AI-Powered Development

Android Studio Otter 3 introduces significant AI integration and workflow improvements. A major update is the ability to select any Large Language Model (LLM) to power AI assistance within the IDE. Supported LLMs include OpenAI, Anthropic, and local models via Olama and LM Studio, alongside continued support for Gemini (with higher limits available through a Gemini API key – Gemini 3 Flash and Pro).

Key features include:

  • Journeys for Android Studio: This feature allows developers to define UI tests using natural language instructions and assertions. The AI then performs these actions on the app and summarizes the results.
  • Enhanced UI Development with Gemini: Gemini is now more deeply integrated into the UI development workflow, directly within the compos preview. This allows for faster iteration from design to implementation.
  • UI Generation from Designs: Developers can create UIs from design mockups or match existing UIs using reference images, with the AI suggesting code to achieve the desired result.
  • Natural Language UI Iteration: The agent assists in applying code modifications based on natural language instructions.

Detailed release notes for Android Studio Otter 3 and Panda are available on developer.android.com/studio.

Translate Gemma – Open Translation Models

Google has introduced Translate Gemma, a new family of open translation models built on Gemma 3. These models support translation across 55 languages and are available in three parameter sizes: 4 billion (for mobile), 12 billion (for consumer laptops), and 27 billion (for cloud deployment).

Translate Gemma was trained and evaluated on 55 language pairs, including major languages like Spanish, French, Chinese, and Hindi, and expanded to nearly 500 additional language pairs to push the boundaries of translation capabilities. The models can be downloaded from Kaggle or Hugging Face, deployed on Vertex AI, or explored through the Gemma cookbook (links provided in the description).

Genkit Go – Enhanced Conversational AI Development

Genkit Go version 1.4.0 introduces experimental sessions for maintaining state across multi-turn conversations and a refactored tools interrupts API for improved human-in-the-loop workflows. Version 1.3.0 added official support for Anthropic’s cloud models and background models, alongside durable streaming with reconnection.

New developer experience features include:

  • Prompt Evaluations: Developers can now bulk test prompts and perform side-by-side comparisons directly within the Genkit dev UI.
  • Genkit MCP Server: The Genkit MCP server is now available in the Anti-Gravity MCP store, providing a more powerful AI-assisted development experience.

An introductory video for Genkit Go is linked in the description.

Chrome 145 – New CSS Capabilities

Chrome 145 is now stable and includes new CSS styling capabilities, specifically column wrapping for CSS multicolumn layout and extended support for customizable select list boxes. A link to the full announcement is available in the video description.

Google I/O 2026 – Save the Date

Google I/O 2026 will be held on May 19th and 20th at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. Further details can be found at io.google.

Conclusion

The January 2026 Google Developer News highlights significant advancements across several key areas. DeepMind’s Project Genie offers a glimpse into the future of interactive world creation, while Android Studio Otter 3 dramatically enhances developer productivity through AI integration. The release of Translate Gemma expands access to high-quality translation models, and Genkit Go continues to improve the developer experience for conversational AI. These updates, coupled with the upcoming Google I/O, signal a year of continued innovation and opportunity for developers.
