Power Restored to Phu Quoc Residents After Submarine Cable Incident

Electricity has been restored to residents of Phu Quoc Special Administrative Region following a 110 kV Hà Tiên - Phú Quốc submarine cable incident that occurred four days ago in the northern part of the island. Approximately 7,500 households are currently receiving power through a rotational supply system.

Details of the Incident and Impact

According to the Southern Power Corporation (Tổng công ty Điện lực miền Nam), the 110 kV Hà Tiên - Phú Quốc submarine cable is one of two vital lines supplying electricity to the special administrative region. This particular cable feeds the Phu Quoc transformer station, while the other supplies the Nam Phu Quoc transformer station.

The power outage primarily affected the areas of Dương Đông, Cửa Cạn, Cửa Dương, Hàm Ninh, and the entire northern region of Phu Quoc Island. This incident impacted nearly 30,000 customers.

Cause of the Incident

The cause of the incident has been identified as a construction unit violating the safety corridor of the 110 kV Hà Tiên - Phú Quốc submarine cable near the Hà Tiên coastline. Specifically, the company "Công ty trách nhiệm hữu hạn tư vấn thiết kế xây dựng Thuận Thành Kiên Giang" (Thuan Thanh Kien Giang Consulting and Construction Design Co., Ltd.) violated the cable's safety corridor while constructing a road, located 300 to 400 meters from the Hà Tiên coast. The pile driving process during this construction caused the damage to the submarine cable.

Temporary Solutions and Restoration Efforts

The immediate temporary solution implemented was to reroute power supply from the Nam Phu Quoc transformer station through the medium-voltage power grid to restore electricity to residents. Additionally, large businesses with their own generators were encouraged to use them for their own power needs.

The Southern Power Corporation stated that the repair of the submarine cable is expected to take approximately 10 days. During this period, temporary power supply measures will continue to be in place.

As part of the repair process, efforts are being made to switch the power supply for customers in the northern part of the island from the Nam Phu Quoc 110 kV transformer station. Furthermore, generators from member units of the Southern Power Corporation on the mainland are being mobilized and transported to the island to supplement the power supply.

As of the reporting time, full power has been restored to customers. However, 6,100 customers are still relying on flexible power sources such as generators and rotational supply.

Timeline for Full Restoration

The repair and restoration of the submarine cable are projected to be completed, and full electricity supply to customers on Phu Quoc Island is expected to resume by December 10th.
