The flight, originating from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 8th, 2014, destined for Beijing, China, deviated significantly from its planned route approximately 38 minutes into the journey while flying over the South China Sea.

Flight Path and Initial Disappearance

Initially, the aircraft disappeared from civilian radar but continued to be tracked by Malaysian military radar for another hour. During this time, it travelled in a direction completely contrary to its intended path before vanishing entirely. The disappearance involved 227 passengers and 12 crew members. Initial, extensive search operations focused on the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.

Previous Findings and Theories

Despite considerable effort, only limited debris – small pieces of the aircraft – have been recovered, washing ashore on the coasts of eastern Africa and islands within the Indian Ocean. This lack of substantial evidence fueled numerous theories, including sabotage and pilot suicide. However, a 2018 official investigation conducted by Malaysian authorities dismissed the suicide theory and ruled out mechanical failure. Notably, the company operates under a contingency fee arrangement: they will only receive a payment of $70 million if they successfully locate the wreckage of MH370.
