Is Matter Around us Pure? Complete Chapter🔥| CLASS 9th Science| NCERT covered | Prashant Kirad

Key Concepts:

• Matter Classification: Pure substances (elements, compounds) vs. Impure substances (mixtures - homogeneous, heterogeneous).
• Pure Substances: Defined by consistent properties, inseparability by physical means, and definite composition.
• Elements: Basic forms of matter that cannot be broken down further (metals, nonmetals, metalloids).
• Compounds: Substances formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in a fixed proportion.
• Mixtures: Impure substances formed by physically mixing two or more substances in any proportion (homogeneous, heterogeneous).
• Homogeneous Mixtures (Solutions): Uniform composition with no visible boundaries.
• Heterogeneous Mixtures: Non-uniform composition with visible boundaries.
• Solutions: Homogeneous mixtures with small particle sizes (solute, solvent).
• Suspensions: Heterogeneous mixtures with large particle sizes that settle over time.
• Colloidal Solutions: Mixtures with particle sizes between solutions and suspensions, exhibiting the Tyndall effect (dispersed phase, dispersed medium).
• Concentration: The amount of solute present in a given amount of solution.
• Solubility: The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent at a specific temperature.
• Saturated Solution: A solution that cannot dissolve any more solute at a given temperature.
• Unsaturated Solution: A solution that can dissolve more solute at a given temperature.
• Tyndall Effect: The scattering of light by particles in a colloidal solution or suspension, making the light beam visible.
• Physical Change: A change in the form or appearance of a substance, but not its chemical composition.
• Chemical Change: A change in the chemical composition of a substance, resulting in the formation of a new substance.

1. Classification of Matter:

• Matter is broadly classified into pure substances and impure substances.
• Pure substances are made up of only one type of atom or molecule.
  • They have consistent properties, are inseparable by physical means (C.I.D. - Consistent properties, Inseparability, Definite composition), and have a definite composition.
  • Pure substances are further divided into elements and compounds.
• Elements are the basic forms of matter that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions (e.g., iron, gold, silver).
  • Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
  • Metals are lustrous, conduct heat and electricity, and are malleable, ductile, and sonorous (S.D.M. - Sonorous, Ductile, Malleable).
  • Nonmetals have varied colors, are poor conductors, and lack metallic properties.
  • Metalloids have intermediate properties between metals and nonmetals (e.g., boron, silicon, germanium).
• Compounds are formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in a fixed proportion (e.g., water - H₂O, carbon dioxide - CO₂).
  • The properties of a compound are different from those of its constituent elements.
  • The components of a compound can only be separated by chemical processes.
• Impure substances are called mixtures, formed by physically mixing two or more substances in any proportion.
  • Mixtures are classified as homogeneous and heterogeneous.
  • Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition throughout (e.g., sugar solution).
  • Heterogeneous mixtures have a non-uniform composition (e.g., soil, sand in water).

2. Pure Substances: Elements and Compounds

• Elements:
  • Cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions.
  • Examples: Iron (Fe), Gold (Au), Silver (Ag).
  • Classified into metals, non-metals, and metalloids.
  • Metals:
    • Lustrous (shiny).
    • Good conductors of heat and electricity.
    • Typically silver-gray or golden-yellow in color.
    • Malleable: Can be hammered into thin sheets.
    • Ductile: Can be drawn into wires.
    • Sonorous: Produce a ringing sound when struck.
  • Non-metals:
    • Display a variety of colors.
    • Poor conductors of heat and electricity.
    • Not lustrous, sonorous, or malleable.
    • Examples: Carbon (C), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N).
  • Metalloids:
    • Exhibit intermediate properties between metals and non-metals.
    • Examples: Boron (B), Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge).
• Compounds:
  • Substances consisting of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion.
  • The properties of compounds are different from those of their constituent elements.
  • The components of a compound can only be separated by chemical processes.
  • Example: Water (H₂O) - Hydrogen and oxygen combine in a fixed ratio of 1:8 by mass.
  • Key Properties:
    • Elements are chemically combined in a fixed proportion.
    • Properties of the compound are different from its constituents.
    • Components can only be separated by chemical processes.

3. Impure Substances: Mixtures (Homogeneous and Heterogeneous)

• Mixtures:
  • Formed by physically mixing two or more substances (elements or compounds) in any proportion.
  • No chemical change occurs during the formation of a mixture.
  • Classified into homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
• Homogeneous Mixtures (Solutions):
  • Components are uniformly mixed with no visible boundaries.
  • Particles are uniformly distributed.
  • Cannot be separated by physical means.
  • The ratio of components can vary.
  • Example: Sugar solution (sugar dissolved in water).
• Heterogeneous Mixtures:
  • Components are not uniformly mixed.
  • Visible boundaries between components.
  • Can be separated by physical means (e.g., filtration).
  • Example: Sand in water.
• Difference between Mixtures and Compounds:

| Feature | Mixture | Compound | | :---------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
