Early Experiences and Trauma
Noi, a double major in psychology and public management from Brazil and a Bonner Scholar at Stetson University, recounts their experiences with homophobia and discrimination in the Brazilian education system. Starting in fifth grade, Noi faced homophobia from teachers and peers. From sixth grade through high school, Noi attended a conservative military school where they were constantly pressured to conform to traditional gender roles and faced censorship of queer-inclusive materials. This environment negatively impacted Noi's well-being, mental health, and academic growth, leading them to perceive their identity as something to be "fixed."
Inspiration and Awakening
Despite feeling isolated, Noi found inspiration in Hita Von Hunti, a Brazilian drag queen who uses web classes to discuss queerness, human rights, and politics. Through Hunti's teachings, Noi learned about the "cis-heteronormative system" that marginalizes queer individuals and realized that fighting against discrimination is a revolutionary act. This realization ignited a desire to promote queer advocacy.

Taking Action in School
Inspired to act, Noi began speaking up in their classes, connecting course subjects with queerness and queerphobia. This approach was well-received by professors and peers, who appreciated Noi's academic and articulate style, reminiscent of Hita Von Hunti. Recognizing the mental health challenges faced by queer students due to unsupportive families and inadequate school resources, Noi created "CMR Talk," a live podcast-style program addressing mental health from the perspective of minority students, particularly queer students. The program's success led to positive feedback, increased awareness, and more students seeking help.
Mentorship and Educational Equity
Noi emphasizes the importance of education for personal growth and the unfairness of denying queer individuals access to welcoming and safe educational settings. This led to the creation of "Mentoia Pilot," a free mentorship program for low-income, public school students, primarily queer individuals from marginalized areas of Brazil. The program aimed to guide students toward acceptance into highly selective academic programs.
Data: Over two years, 22 mentees were accepted into more than 27 national and international academic programs, earning approximately $40,000 in scholarships.
Public Policy Advocacy
Driven to create systemic change, Noi became an educational activist in the civil society for a fairness and sustainable world (C20), a committee of the G20 in Brazil. There, Noi learned about public policy and proposed a policy to implement a multi-disciplinary team in every Brazilian school to address discriminatory violence against queer individuals and minority groups. The proposal was debated and discussed by the Brazilian government within the G20 framework.
Outfront Youth Leadership
Currently, Noi is working on a project called "Outfront Youth Leadership" in Pride, mentoring county high schoolers in an eight-week course to create initiatives that impact the queer community in Valja County, Florida. The program empowers young people to transform their dissatisfaction into transformative actions.
Conclusion
Noi's journey highlights the transformative power of education, advocacy, and mentorship in creating more inclusive and equitable environments for queer individuals. By sharing their personal experiences and outlining their various initiatives, Noi encourages others to use their pain as a catalyst for change and to actively work towards a future where all young people can thrive, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
