Enabling Apple Intelligence
To enable Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, follow these steps:
-
Update Software:
- Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Ensure your device is updated to at least iOS 17.1 (or the equivalent iPadOS version). Future versions like 17.2 or 18 will also support it. The key is to be on version 17.1 or later for Vietnamese language support.
-
Configure Siri and Language Settings:
- Go back to Settings.
- Find and tap on Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Within this section, ensure two critical settings are configured:
- Language: Under "Requests," select Vietnamese.
- Device Language: Ensure your device's primary language is also set to Vietnamese.
- Both Siri's language and the device's language must be Vietnamese to activate Apple Intelligence.
-
Activate the Feature:
- Once the above conditions are met, you will see a toggle switch for Apple Intelligence.
- Turn this switch on.
-
Confirmation:
- A simple way to confirm Apple Intelligence is active is to open any app, such as the Notes app.
- Look for a specific icon: a symbol resembling a flower combined with a pen. This icon indicates that Apple Intelligence is enabled.
Using Apple Intelligence Features
1. Writing Tool
The Writing Tool is a versatile AI feature accessible within most applications, provided the developer hasn't disabled it.
- Accessing the Tool:
- Open any application (e.g., Outlook, Notes).
- Type or select a piece of text.
- Long-press on the selected text or tap on the "Writing Tool" option that appears.
- Core Functions:
- Describe Changes: Allows you to instruct the AI on how to modify the text.
- Proofread: Corrects grammar and spelling errors.
- Rewrite: Rephrases the text.
- Change Tone: Modifies the writing style (e.g., formal, informal).
- Summarize: Condenses the text into key points.
- Extract Key Points: Presents the main ideas in a bulleted list.
- Draft (with ChatGPT): For longer text generation, it can leverage ChatGPT.
- Examples:
- Summarization: In the Notes app, select text and tap "Summarize" to get a quick overview. Tapping "Replace" directly inserts the summary into the document.
- Text Expansion and Refinement: Select text and prompt the AI to "write longer and describe the practical benefits of AI in writing emails." The AI can then generate a more detailed response, potentially using ChatGPT for complex tasks.
- Table Generation: The Writing Tool can transform text into a table format, saving significant time compared to manual formatting or using separate AI tools.
2. Web Page Summarization (Safari)
This feature allows for quick comprehension of web content directly within Safari.
- Requirements: Must be used with the Safari browser.
- Process:
- Open a web page in Safari.
- Tap the Reader Mode icon (next to the address bar).
- Select "Show Reader".
- A "Summarize" button will appear at the top. Tap it to generate a summary of the article.
- Functionality:
- Provides a concise overview of long web articles.
- Can be combined with the Writing Tool: After summarizing, you can select the summary text and use the Writing Tool for further actions like translation.
- Translation: If the web page is in English, the summary can be translated into Vietnamese using the Writing Tool.
- Example: Visiting a news article on The Verge, activating Reader Mode, and then using the "Summarize" function to get the main points. The summary can then be translated to Vietnamese.
3. Email Thread Summarization (Apple Mail)
This feature streamlines understanding long email conversations.
- Requirements: Use the default Apple Mail application.
- Process:
- Open an email thread in the Mail app.
- Look for the "Summarize" option, typically located near the top of the thread.
- Tap "Summarize" to get an AI-generated summary of the entire conversation.
- Benefits:
- Quickly grasp the progress and key information within lengthy email exchanges.
- Saves time compared to reading each individual email.
- Note: While individual emails can also be summarized, summarizing entire threads is highlighted as the most impactful use case.
4. Siri with ChatGPT Integration
This allows for more powerful and context-aware responses from Siri.
- Activation:
- Activate Siri by double-tapping the home bar (or the area where you usually swipe to go home).
- Process:
- Ask Siri a question or make a request.
- When prompted, choose to use ChatGPT for the response.
- Examples:
- Asking for a recipe: "How to make Japanese dipping sauce." Siri, powered by ChatGPT, provides the recipe.
- Requesting suggestions: "Suggest four dinner dishes to eat with my wife." Siri, using ChatGPT, offers recommendations.
- Voice Input Note: The presenter notes that voice input might not always be recognized accurately for complex requests, suggesting text input might be more reliable in such cases.
5. Visual Intelligence
This feature enables users to interact with and understand images using AI.
- Accessing the Feature:
- While viewing an image or video, take a screenshot.
- On the screenshot preview, you will see new options: a question mark icon and a search icon (or highlight to search).
- Functionality:
- Ask a Question about the Image: Tap the question mark icon. You can then ask specific questions about the content of the image (e.g., "What dish is in the picture?"). The AI sends the image content to ChatGPT for analysis and provides an answer. You can continue the conversation with ChatGPT.
- Search a Specific Region: Draw a circle around a particular area of the image you want to identify or learn more about. The AI will then search for information related to that specific region.
- Translate Text in Images: If an image contains text in a foreign language, you can select the text and use a "Translate" option to convert it to your preferred language.
- Example:
- Seeing a dish in a video, taking a screenshot, and asking "What dish is this?" The AI identifies it as "Mussels Ala Normande." You can then ask follow-up questions like "What are the ingredients?"
- Identifying an unknown molecule by circling it and letting the AI search for its identity.
6. AI-Generated Memories (Photos App)
This feature automates the creation of themed memory videos.
- Accessing the Feature:
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap the "Create" button, which now features the Apple Intelligence logo.
- Process:
- Enter a descriptive prompt, such as "Create a memory including photos of the beach in Phu Quoc."
- The AI will search your entire photo library for relevant images.
- It will then automatically compile these photos into a themed video with appropriate music and effects.
- Customization:
- You can add or remove photos from the generated memory.
- You can choose which photos to include or exclude.
- Benefits:
- Significantly faster than manually creating memory videos.
- The AI intelligently selects and arranges photos to match the theme.
- The generated memories can be exported as videos or saved for later viewing.
7. Natural Language Photo Search (Photos App)
This allows for more intuitive searching of your photo library.
- Requirements:
- The feature requires the iPhone to be locked, charging, and connected to Wi-Fi for initial indexing. This is because the process is resource-intensive and can drain the battery.
- Process:
- Open the Photos app.
- Use the search bar to enter descriptive phrases instead of just keywords.
- Examples:
- Search for "seafood dishes" to find all photos of seafood.
- Search for "airplane photos" to see all pictures of airplanes.
- Search for "beach photos" to retrieve images taken at the beach.
- The AI can even identify images containing specific words like "beach" within them.
- Benefits:
- More natural and convenient way to find specific photos compared to traditional keyword searches.
- Can interpret more complex and descriptive queries.
- Limitations: The presenter notes that the feature is not always perfect and may not yield results in every situation. Initial indexing can take time and requires specific conditions (locked, charging, Wi-Fi).
Conclusion and Future Content
The presenter concludes by encouraging viewers to experiment with Apple Intelligence features and share their experiences and feedback. They also invite suggestions for future video topics, such as how to effectively use Apple Intelligence on a Mac. The goal is to provide practical insights into how these AI capabilities can be applied in everyday life and work.
