Online Kidnapping Scam in Dong Thap
A recent online kidnapping scam in Dong Thap involved perpetrators impersonating police officers. They tricked a young man into believing he was involved in drug trafficking or money laundering, then coerced him into faking his own kidnapping via phone. The scammers orchestrated a complex scenario, forcing the victim to move between locations and make threatening calls to his family. Their tactic relied on psychological manipulation, leveraging technology to instill fear and compliance. Fortunately, law enforcement intervened swiftly, rescuing the victim and confirming it was not a genuine abduction. The Dong Thap Provincial Criminal Police Department advises the public to remain calm in unusual situations, contact relatives, and report to authorities immediately.
Fraudulent Health Product Sales by Impersonating Doctors
In Nghe An province, a group led by Phung Thi Thu Hien from Hanoi was arrested for customer deception. To create a facade, Hien acquired a digital scale, projector, folding bed, and rented an ultrasound machine. They also hired individuals without medical licenses to pose as doctors. After examining patients, the group would sell health supplements, falsely advertised as potent treatments, at highly inflated prices. Authorities seized 1,500 boxes of these supplements and identified nearly 1,000 victims, primarily in the mountainous regions of Nghe An.
Reforms to Unemployment Benefits and Worker Support (Effective 2025)
Starting in 2025, under the new Employment Law, workers will receive higher unemployment benefits and access them sooner. The Vietnam Social Security reports that the maximum unemployment benefit will increase fivefold the minimum regional wage. The waiting period for benefits will be reduced from 15 working days to 10. The law also expands eligibility to include short-term workers, those not opting for specific durations, and salaried business managers. Additionally, workers undergoing vocational training will receive supplementary meal allowances, and businesses will find it easier to access training support policies. The government retains the authority to adjust contribution levels during economic crises or natural disasters.
Tet (Lunar New Year) Support for Disadvantaged Workers
Workers facing hardship and low incomes will receive gifts during the upcoming Binh Ngo Lunar New Year, with an estimated value of 1.3 million VND per person. This includes 1 million VND in cash and 300,000 VND in goods. The Vietnam General Confederation of Labor plans to organize visits and gift-giving. Support will be extended to union members with outstanding production results, workers in difficult circumstances, those severely impacted by natural disasters, individuals in remote areas, and those in hazardous or demanding occupations. The "Cong Doan Tet Market" and "Tet Sum Vay" programs will continue, offering essential goods at preferential prices and travel assistance for workers returning home. This year, the Confederation will also host "Cong Doan Tet Meals" with subsidized meals costing 70,000 VND to foster a sense of unity and sharing.
VNEID Application for Product Verification and Traceability
The VNEID application is increasingly demonstrating its utility in daily life. Consumers will soon be able to use the VNEID Check tool to identify counterfeit or substandard goods and trace the origin of chemicals and precursors. This tool, piloted by the Ministry of Public Security, allows individuals and businesses to verify identities and track product origins via QR codes within the VNEID app. Users can access clear information about products like cosmetics and food before use, and the app will warn about unverified or counterfeit chemicals. For businesses, VNIDcheck offers a transparent supply chain control, enabling healthy competition, potential tax reductions, and export promotion. For regulatory bodies, it enhances the efficiency of managing goods, chemicals, and precursors through interconnected and synchronized data. The National Numbering Association's connection with databases in 118 countries, coupled with national and international integration, will contribute to a comprehensive database for precursors and clean chemicals, supporting management and commercialization. Previously, the lack of a centralized data system hindered the effective identification and verification of product origins and supply chains, especially for chemicals and precursors. Establishing a centralized, synchronized, and interconnected data solution across sectors for tracking imports, production, transportation, and consumption is crucial for strengthening state management.
