Key Concepts

  • Azure Functions Consumption SKU: Serverless execution model with event-driven billing.
  • Durable Task Framework: A storage provider for fault-tolerant, stateful code execution.
  • Azure Elastic Sand: iSCSI-based block storage running over standard IP networks.
  • Spherical Quantization: An advanced vector compression technique for optimizing search performance in Cosmos DB.
  • Model Context/Orchestration: Techniques for modifying AI output via system prompts, memory, tools, and fine-tuning.
  • MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server: A standard for connecting AI assistants to local data sources or databases.

Compute and Infrastructure

  • Azure Functions: The Consumption SKU now supports the Durable Task Framework, enabling fault-tolerant, stateful workflows (e.g., distributed transactions, multi-agent orchestration) without requiring dedicated infrastructure.
  • VM Retirements: Several older VM SKUs (AV2, BV1, DS/DV2, FS, LS, LSM2, DV3, EV3) are being retired. Renewals for 1-year and 3-year reserved instances will be restricted starting in July.
  • New V7 SKUs: The D, L, and E series V7 SKUs are now available, powered by Intel Xeon 6 processors. These offer ~20% better compute performance with varying memory-to-vCPU ratios:
    • L-series (Low Memory): 2:1 ratio.
    • General Purpose: 4:1 ratio.
    • Memory Optimized: 8:1 ratio.
  • Azure Backup: Large-scale recovery is now faster, allowing the restoration of up to 100 virtual machines in a single operation.

Networking and Containers

  • Egress Credits: Europe now offers free egress and at-cost data transfers when moving data from Azure to other service providers. Users should verify specific UK-based transfer windows and scoping.
  • Azure Communication Services: Microsoft is enforcing stricter usage of the "alternate ID" feature. Users are advised to stop using this field for non-supported workflows, as it causes inconsistent behavior in Teams Phone assignments.
  • App Gateway for Containers: Integration with AKS Automatic is now available via an add-on, automating the provisioning and configuration of the ingress/load balancing solution.

Storage

  • Azure Elastic Sand:
    • ABS Gen 2 Support: Now supports Azure VMware Solution (ABS) Gen 2 private clouds, allowing direct connectivity over IP networks without the throughput limitations of ExpressRoute gateways.
    • Snapshots: Supports single-volume, delta-based snapshots, which optimize space and cost by only storing changed data.
  • Azure NetApp Files: Backup is now enabled by default for all new volumes (opt-out available).
  • Premium SSD v2: Now available in all three availability zones in the Japan West region.

Database Services

  • Cosmos DB:
    • Spherical Quantization: A new vector compression technique that maintains search fidelity while significantly increasing indexing speed and search performance.
    • Cosmos DB Shell: A bash-like CLI that allows developers to navigate database hierarchies like a file system. It includes an MCP server, enabling local AI projects to interact directly with the database.
  • SQL Managed Instance (MI): Business Critical tier now supports "right-size memory" (flexible memory) in preview, allowing users to customize vCPU-to-memory ratios online.

AI and Machine Learning (Foundry)

  • GPT-4o (GPT-55 Instant): Optimized for chat, retrieval, and tool-integrated workflows. It features improved factual accuracy and response efficiency for multi-turn conversations.
  • Real-time Models:
    • GPT Realtime Translate: Provides live multilingual translation.
    • GPT Realtime Whisper: Provides live speech-to-text transcription.
    • GPT Realtime 2: A reasoning-capable speech-to-speech model that can simulate "thinking" pauses (e.g., "let me think about that") to handle complex voice interactions more naturally.
  • Document Intelligence: The V3 API is scheduled for retirement in 2029; users are encouraged to migrate to V4.

Synthesis

This week’s updates emphasize operational efficiency and AI integration. The expansion of the Durable Task Framework to the Consumption SKU and the introduction of the Cosmos DB Shell with MCP support highlight a shift toward making complex, stateful, and AI-driven architectures more accessible. Furthermore, the introduction of Intel Xeon 6-based V7 SKUs and the optimization of vector search via spherical quantization demonstrate a continued focus on high-performance computing and advanced data retrieval capabilities. Users should prioritize migrating away from retired VM SKUs and the Document Intelligence V3 API to ensure long-term stability.
