Key Concepts
- Azure Build Updates: A massive wave of announcements focusing on "hill climbing" (continuous improvement of compute, data, and AI outcomes).
- Agentic AI & Governance: Tools like Assert (scoring/testing) and ACS (Agent Control Specification) for managing non-deterministic AI behavior.
- MCP (Model Context Protocol): A standard for connecting AI agents to data sources and tools via standardized interfaces (often rendering graphical iframes).
- Foundry: Microsoft’s platform for hosting, tuning, and managing AI agents and models.
- Work/Web/Fabric IQ: Specialized knowledge retrieval services tailored for AI agents rather than human consumption.
- Confidential Computing: Expanding live migration and security for sensitive workloads.
1. Compute & Infrastructure
- Cobalt 200 ARM VMs: Preview. Custom silicon offering 50% CPU performance gains, 20% better storage IOPS, and 15% higher network bandwidth. Optimized for cloud databases and web servers.
- Lsv5/Lsv5-variant VMs: Preview. Built on 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors for storage-intensive workloads, offering up to 138TB of local NVMe storage.
- Azure Linux 4.0: Preview. Fedora-derived, open-source, and optimized for Azure infrastructure.
- Resiliency Manager: Preview. Provides end-to-end recommendations across Availability Zones, Chaos Studio, and Azure Monitor.
- Confidential TDX VMs: Live migration now in preview, allowing zero-downtime maintenance for encrypted-in-use workloads.
2. Azure Functions & Logic Apps
- Azure Functions: Now supports Node.js 24 (GA), Go language (Preview), and AI assistant plugins for GitHub Copilot/Claude. Flex consumption plans now support event-driven serverless agents.
- Logic Apps: New "Automation SKU" combines Logic Apps with Foundry agents. Features "Knowledge as a Service" for easy RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) implementation and "Connector Namespaces" to simplify authentication across systems like SAP or Salesforce.
3. Data & Databases
- Azure Horizon DB: Preview. A Microsoft-forked PostgreSQL service scaling to 128TB, featuring native diskANN (vector search) and BM25 (lexical search) for hybrid AI search.
- Cosmos DB:
- Semantic Reranker: Reduces token costs by reranking search results based on semantic intent.
- Distributed Transactions: Preview. Ensures atomicity across partitions.
- Agentic Toolkits: New toolkits for retrieval, memory, and MCP integration to simplify AI-to-database interactions.
- Fabric: "Rayfin" (Preview) allows running apps directly within Fabric to inherit enterprise security and OneLake data access.
4. AI Governance & Security
- Assert & ACS: Open specifications to address the non-deterministic nature of AI. Assert handles scoring/regression testing, while ACS provides interception points (pre/post-model calls) to enforce guardrails.
- Foundry Guardrails: Guided questionnaires help developers select appropriate controls based on data sensitivity and agent use cases.
- Purview Integration: Now observes and protects local agent interactions (GitHub Copilot, etc.) and propagates sensitivity labels into Foundry IQ.
5. Models & AI Services
- Phi-3 Models:
- Phi-3.5 Instruct: Small language model for text tasks.
- Phi-3.5 Plant: 14B parameter reasoning model with tool-calling capabilities.
- Model Router: A single endpoint that uses AI to select the most efficient model for a specific task, now controllable via Azure Policy.
- Azure AI Speech: LLM-based APIs (GA) now support custom prompting and translation, replacing traditional phrase lists.
- Custom Avatars: GA in Foundry. Allows creating talking-head avatars from a single photo or 10 minutes of video.
6. Developer Tools & Miscellaneous
- Mdash (Multi-model Agentic Scanning Harness): Uses 100+ specialized agents to discover and remediate vulnerabilities in code repositories.
- Work IQ: Exposes enterprise "how we work" data (meeting transcripts, chats, artifacts) to AI agents via REST/MCP APIs.
- Web IQ: Built on the Bing Global Index but optimized for AI agents to return structured evidence rather than full pages, minimizing token usage.
- Quantum Computing: Majorana 2 achieves a 1,000x improvement in qubit stability, targeting a usable quantum processor by 2029.
Synthesis
The overarching theme of this Build cycle is the transition from "flashy" AI demos to operationalizing AI at scale. Microsoft is focusing heavily on cost-efficiency (tokconomics), governance (guardrails and policy), and integration (MCP and IQ services). By providing standardized protocols like MCP and specialized knowledge services like Work/Web/Fabric IQ, Microsoft aims to make AI agents reliable, secure, and deeply embedded into the enterprise workflow rather than isolated, experimental tools.
