The Waffle House Epiphany: A Turning Point

The speaker, a former history and business major at UVA, recounts a pivotal moment that led to the founding of Reddit. Initially, like many Armenian students with history degrees, the speaker intended to pursue law school. This path was actively being pursued through the LSAT (Law School Admission Test).

The LSAT Experience and the Decision to Leave

Approximately 30 minutes into the LSAT, the speaker experienced a sudden onset of hunger. This physical discomfort served as an unexpected catalyst for a profound career re-evaluation. The speaker describes walking out of the LSAT exam and heading to a Waffle House located on Route 29.

The Birth of an Idea: From Waffle House to Reddit

It was at this Waffle House, specifically in the booth where the speaker sat, that the decision was made to abandon the pursuit of law. The speaker realized that instead of becoming a lawyer, the true calling was to start a company. This realization directly led to the inception of Reddit. The significance of this moment is underscored by the fact that Waffle House has since installed a plaque at the booth where this life-altering decision was made.

Synthesis/Conclusion

This anecdote highlights a critical juncture in the speaker's life, demonstrating how an unexpected, even mundane, event (hunger during an exam) can trigger a significant career shift. The story emphasizes that entrepreneurial ventures can arise from unconventional circumstances and that decisive moments can occur outside of traditional professional settings. The founding of Reddit, a major online platform, is directly attributed to this spontaneous decision made at a Waffle House.
