Lego Manual Design: A Case Study in Emotional Communication

The speaker recounts an interview with the head of Lego manual writing, highlighting key insights into effective communication.

1. Deep Audience Understanding:

• Lego manual designers dedicate 1-1.5 years to understanding their target audience.
• They possess detailed knowledge of age-specific capabilities (e.g., the difference between what a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old can accomplish).
• This deep understanding allows them to create manuals that are helpful and non-distracting, resonating with the user.

2. Injecting Emotion into the Process:

• Lego manuals are designed to evoke emotion.
• The number of pieces and moves per step could be consistent, but this approach is less engaging.
• Instead, they vary the complexity of steps to create an emotional experience.

3. Varying Complexity for Emotional Engagement:

• Some steps are designed to be easy and quick, providing immediate gratification.
• Other steps are more complex and challenging, requiring more effort and focus.
• This variation in complexity creates an emotional arc, making the building process more relevant and motivational.

4. Real-World Application:

• The Lego manual design principles demonstrate the importance of emotional connection in communication.
• By understanding the audience and creating an emotional experience, Lego manuals effectively guide users through the building process.

Notable Quote:

• "They designed their manuals to have emotion in them... as you go through building Legos you're having an emotional experience which makes it relevant and motivational."

Synthesis/Conclusion:

The Lego manual design process serves as a compelling example of how understanding the audience and incorporating emotional elements can significantly enhance communication effectiveness. By varying the complexity of tasks and creating an emotional journey, Lego manuals transform a potentially monotonous activity into an engaging and motivational experience. This highlights the importance of considering emotional connection in all forms of communication.
